How to Be a Tourist in Old Town Alexandria

For Northern Virginians, it’s easy to take a trip to one of the country’s top tourist destinations. Here are five ways to play tourist.

Think you’ve seen Old Town Alexandria? Think again. Beyond King Street’s familiar shops and restaurants are hidden alleys, centuries-old stories, waterfront escapes, and quirky landmarks that can make even longtime locals feel like first-time visitors.

1. Explore America’s Most Historic Side Streets

“Alexandria is like Disney World for historians,” says Alexandria History Tours owner and historical author Tim Rose. “It’s one of the most well-preserved historic cities in America. Every block is packed with history.”

Skip King Street for an hour. Instead, wander Captain’s Row‘s Federal-style homes. Peek into hidden alleys. Walk to Jones Point Park to see the original southern cornerstone of Washington, DC.

“Many people come to Alexandria and immediately feel swept back in time,” Rose says. “The brick streets and cobblestone alleys are like a time capsule. They capture the imagination and make people feel there must be a story here. Of course there is — Alexandria is the story of America’s founding.”

2. See the City from the Water

Many locals overlook one of Alexandria’s greatest attractions — the Potomac River itself. Hop aboard the Potomac Water Taxi for a ride to Georgetown or National Harbor, or simply enjoy the skyline before returning to Old Town. It’s one of the best ways to appreciate the city from the same vantage point visitors once had as they traveled by boat to Mount Vernon.

“The water taxi is such a fun and unique activity to incorporate into a day in Old Town Alexandria,” says Shirlington resident Taylor Naporano. “Not only do you get a beautiful view of the city from the water, but it’s also a great way to take a break from walking.”

3. Hunt Down America’s Skinniest Historic House

You can hardly walk past this bright-blue house without stopping for a photo. At just 7 feet, 6 inches wide, the Hollensbury Spite House at 523 Queen Street is widely considered the narrowest historic house in America.

“There’s a secret we love to show visitors,” Rose says. “Hollensbury was a brickmaker, and you can still find one of his bricks stamped with his name near the house.”

Brickmaker John Hollensbury built it in 1830 after growing tired of wagon wheels scraping the walls of his home and people lingering in the adjacent alley. Rather than build a fence, he filled the alley with a house. Nearly two centuries later, his act of spite has become one of Old Town’s most photographed landmarks.

The Spite House is a private residence, so you’ll need to admire it from the sidewalk.

4. Shop Beyond the Boutiques

Torpedo Factory Art Center

Instead of another candle or T-shirt, visit the Torpedo Factory Art Center, where you can watch painters, photographers, jewelers and sculptors at work before purchasing directly from the artists themselves. Because studios rotate regularly, every visit offers something new.

“Some of the best pieces of art I’ve ever purchased came from the Torpedo Factory,” says Naporano. “There are so many talented artists, and they love talking about their work and helping you find something perfect for your home.”

5. End Like You’re on Vacation

Few places in Northern Virginia feel more like a getaway than Alexandria’s waterfront. Sip sangria on Barca’s dockside patio or settle in for steaks and seafood at Ada’s on the River while watching boats drift along the Potomac.

“I love exploring Old Town,” says Reston resident Stephanie Oliver. “It’s fun to browse the shops, then grab a drink on the water at Ada’s before hopping back on my bike and taking the trail along the river home.”
