Alexandria just landed the No. 5 spot on Travel + Leisure’s Best Cities in the U.S. list for the first time. This is the fourth consecutive year that Alexandria has ranked on the list as part of the annual World’s Best Awards survey.
The No. 5 slot is a jump from last year, when Alexandria placed No. 15.
This year, the city was recognized for its close proximity to Washington, DC, as well as its rich history, vibrant art scene, culture, and lifestyle.
“Travelers love Alexandria’s proximity to Washington DC, giving the coastal city its big-city polish, yet it still feels far enough removed from the fray,” Travel + Leisure said. Approximately 7 miles south of DC, Old Town lies on the western bank of the Potomac River, welcoming the port city scenery.
The vibrant shopping district and restaurants on King Street also drew attention on the list. “Also of note is the colonial architecture in Old Town, the Potomac River waterfront, shopping on King Street, and an emerging food scene,” said Travel + Leisure.
The top spot this year went to Santa Fe, New Mexico, followed by New Orleans, Louisiana; Charleston, South Carolina; and Savannah, Georgia.
Condé Nast Traveler also recognized Alexandria on its list of the best small cities in the U.S. It earned the No. 3 spot in October for the second year in a row and has been in the top five for seven years.
