Two drivers have been charged in a multi-vehicle crash that occurred Sunday on the I-66 express lanes. The incident happened on the westbound express lanes at the 64.2-mile marker in Fairfax County. Three people died in the crash, according to Virginia State Police.
Around 4 p.m., a Honda Pilot struck the back of a utility truck carrying oxygen tanks. The Pilot caught fire, and all three people in the vehicle were killed, VSP said.
A Toyota 4Runner was involved in “the events leading up to the crash.” The driver of both the 4Runner and the utility truck were charged with reckless driving, according to VSP.
As a result of the crash, the westbound express lanes were closed until around 11 p.m. on Sunday. Virginia State Police continue to investigate the incident.
