5 Hidden Gems to Visit in Northern Virginia

Some of NoVA’s most memorable experiences are hiding in plain sight.

By Dawn Klavon August 10, 2026 at 7:00 am

Everyone knows the blockbuster attractions — the Smithsonian museums, Mount Vernon, Arlington National Cemetery and Wolf Trap. But Northern Virginia is also home to a collection of quirky, fascinating and little-known destinations that reward curious travelers willing to venture beyond the obvious.

Whether you’re a history buff, science geek, or just looking for an ‘outside the box’ weekend adventure, these hidden gems in Northern Virginia deserve a spot on your bucket list.

Stabler-Leadbeater Apothecary Museum

Step inside what feels like a real-life potion shop. Shelves lined with hand-blown glass bottles, original dried herbs, medical instruments and centuries-old remedies fill this remarkably preserved pharmacy, which operated from 1792 until 1933. A National Historic Landmark, the museum offers an up-close glimpse into early American medicine, and the building’s original inventory makes it one of the country’s most complete surviving apothecaries. Throughout the year, themed tours and special events — including Harry Potter-inspired “Magical Apothecary” programs — add another layer of fun to the experience. 105-107 South Fairfax St., Alexandria, check website for ticket information

National Inventors Hall of Fame Museum

Tucked inside the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office headquarters is one of the region’s most inspiring museums. Interactive exhibits celebrate the inventors behind everyday innovations, from life-saving medical breakthroughs to household staples. Discover stories of creativity that shaped modern life. You’ll learn about the people behind everything from the barcode to GPS while gaining a new appreciation for the power of imagination and perseverance. 600 Dulany St, Alexandria, free admission

DEA Museum

It may be one of the region’s least-known federal museums, but it’s also among its most compelling. The Drug Enforcement Administration Museum chronicles more than a century of drug law enforcement through interactive exhibits, historic artifacts, undercover equipment and stories from agents who worked some of the nation’s most significant investigations. Exhibits also explore the science of addiction, forensic technology and the evolving challenges facing law enforcement, making it an eye-opening stop for adults and older teens. 700 Army Navy Dr., Arlington, free admission

Foamhenge at Cox Farms

Yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like. Artist Mark Cline’s full-scale replica of England’s Stonehenge is made entirely from giant blocks of painted Styrofoam. Originally created in Natural Bridge, the whimsical attraction found a new home at Cox Farms, where visitors can wander among the faux prehistoric stones. Equal parts roadside oddity and art installation, Foamhenge is accessible during the summer on Saturdays from 1 to 2 p.m. via the Corner Market shuttle. 15621 Braddock Rd, Centreville, included with your fall festival admission during regular hours of operation

Heritage Farm Museum

Hidden within Claude Moore Park, this charming museum tells the story of everyday rural life in Loudoun County before suburbia arrived. Antique tractors, horse-drawn wagons, vintage kitchen tools, quilts, toys and thousands of agricultural artifacts illustrate how families lived and worked from the 1850s through the mid-20th century. The museum regularly hosts hands-on demonstrations and family-friendly programs that bring Virginia’s farming heritage to life, with a Quilt Festival and competition coming November 7th. 21668 Heritage Farm Ln., Sterling, $3 to $5
