6 Free Things to Do in Washington, DC

There are still plenty of free activities to enjoy despite the government shutdown.

By Michele Kettner October 23, 2025 at 2:19 pm

With many attractions currently closed due to the government shutdown, it may feel like there aren’t many things to do in Washington, DC without breaking out your wallet. Luckily, the nation’s capital has plenty of free events to offer. Here are six free activities in DC we are looking forward to.

Adams Morgan PorchFest

November 1, 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Head to this one-of-a-kind concert without the fees. The annual festival features around 100 performances — including everything from classic rock to funk — at more than 20 different stages throughout Adams Morgan. Multiple locations in Adams Morgan

PUTT in the Park

Through November 2, times vary

Instead of spending a day on the links, hit the putt-putt course instead. The six-hole course at CityCenter is perfect for a friendly competition or a quick game during lunch. The Park at CityCenter: 10th and H Streets NW, Washington, DC

Capital Art Fair

November 8-9, times vary

Spend the weekend browsing the oldest fair in America devoted to fine prints and drawings. Each day will showcase 17 different exhibitors from across the country. Guests will also be able to explore 500 years of art history, with original prints from Rembrandt, Picasso, and others on display. University Club: 1135 16th St. NW, Washington, DC

Out of Many, One: Portraits of America’s Immigrants

Through January 1, 2026, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Just because the Smithsonian museums are closed, doesn’t mean you can’t explore art throughout the region. The new Milken Center in DC is showcasing former President George W. Bush’s traveling exhibition. The special gallery features 43 four-color portraits of immigrants from around the world. Take a Free Guided Tour at The Kennedy Center

Daily, times vary

You’ve probably been to The Kennedy Center for a performance, but have you ever learned about the history of the campus? Each day, the performing arts venue offers four different guided tours that showcase the historic events that led to the living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Tours last about 75 minutes and are not available on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, or July 4. 2700 F St. NW, Washington, DC

The People’s House: A White House Experience

Daily, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

White House tours are currently suspended due to construction, but you can still get a peek at the history thanks to this immersive experience. The People’s House was created by the White House Historical Association and helps bring the story of the White House to life through galleries and life-size replicas. 1700 Pennsylvania Ave. NW, Washington, DC
