Alexandria Offers Free Attraction Passes During Government Shutdown

Visit Alexandria has also launched a webpage highlighting venues that remain open during the shutdown.

Visit Alexandria is highlighting the area’s attractions that are open during the government shutdown. And they want to make these venues more affordable for affected federal workers and tourists.

During the government shutdown, federal workers and DC-area hotel guests can go to Alexandria’s Visitors Center at 221 King St. and receive a free Keys to the City pass (a $60 value). The pass includes access to nine historic sites, plus 40 percent off coupons for admission to George Washington’s Mount Vernon, rides on City Cruises’ Potomac Water Taxi, and a tour of the Tall Ship Providence.

Federal employees must show a valid government ID, and hotel guests must present a room key or digital reservation confirmation.

Alexandria has also created a webpage with information about museums, historic sites, tours, parks, and more that remain open during the shutdown. Some of the open museums include the Alexandria Archaeology Museum, Gadsby’s Tavern Museum, Torpedo Factory Arts Center, and Carlyle House Historic Park.

The City of Alexandria also provides an online list of resources for affected federal workers, including help with housing, taxes, and childcare costs plus food assistance.
