Accused Murderer Leaves Northern Virginia Mental Health Facility and Boards One-Way International Flight

A man has fled the U.S. on a one-way flight to Tajikistan while on an approved 48-hour pass from a NoVA mental health facility, FOX5 reported.

Abdulloi Toshpulodzoda was accused of murdering his landlord in 2019. He was found not guilty by reason of insanity and committed to the Northern Virginia Mental Health Institute (NVMHI) in Falls Church in 2022.

Toshpulodzoda left NVMHI on July 6 and traveled to Dulles International Airport. He boarded a Turkish Airlines flight to Istanbul before continuing to Dushanbe, Tajikistan, court documents obtained by FOX5 show.

Virginia law allows a mental health hospital to grant committed individuals permission to leave the facility without an escort on day or weekend passes. In 2024, Toshpulodzoda was reportedly allowed to travel to Washington, DC, to obtain a passport.

His trip to Tajikistan was shortly after a judge determined he remained mentally ill and needed inpatient treatment, FOX5 reported. After Toshpulodzoda failed to return on July 8, NVMHI placed him on escape status and issued a facility warrant.

Virginia’s Commonwealth Attorney’s Office filed a motion on August 5 asking a judge to issue a warrant enforceable beyond Virginia’s borders. A bench warrant was later issued for Toshpulodzoda’s arrest, according to FOX5.
