Matchbox in Fairfax’s Mosaic District Has Closed

The restaurant will be replaced by another Thompson Restaurant Group brand.

By Emily Perez August 17, 2026 at 11:17 am

The Matchbox restaurant in Fairfax’s Mosaic district has closed up shop. The restaurant’s last day of business was August 16, according to a post in the Vienna VA Foodies Facebook group.

The restaurant will be replaced by Makers Union, another concept from Thompson Restaurant Group. The Makers Union website lists a Mosaic location as “coming soon” at 2911 District Ave., Ste. 120, which is the Matchbox location.

Several commenters who recently dined at the restaurant said staff had told them the space would undergo renovations before reopening as Makers Union.

The closure follows another Matchbox departure in Northern Virginia. The chain’s Reston Station location permanently closed at the end of 2025, according to FFXNow. Thompson Hospitality did not provide a reason for the closure.

The Makers Union website does not currently list an opening date for the Mosaic location.
