NBC4 news anchor Jim Handly announced that he is retiring from the station. Handly shared the “personal breaking news” live on Monday evening’s broadcast.
Handly said that, “at the end of November, after the midterms, I’m hanging up my hat for retirement.” He’s worked at the station for 35 years. He thanked his colleagues and called them “the best team in the business.”
Handly began his broadcasting career anchoring and reporting at an NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach, Florida. Prior to joining NBC4, he was as an anchor and reporter for the CBS affiliate in Connecticut.
He anchors the station’s 6 p.m. and 11 p.m. newscasts. “He’s also reported live on big breaking news stories in the DC area. Along the way, he’s also covered seven inaugurations, countless election nights, and four U.S. papal visits and, as a Florida native, his share of hurricanes,” according to his NBC4 bio.
He also has been honored with multiple Emmy Awards and an Edward R. Murrow Award.
“I could not be happier after this very busy year to pass the torch to the next generation of journalists,” he said during his announcement.
