Enjoy Grape Stomping at These Northern Virginia Wineries

These wineries allow you to partake in the messy tradition — and enjoy a glass of wine as a reward.

If you’ve ever watched the iconic I Love Lucy episode where Lucy Ricardo ends up knee-deep in a vat of grapes, you’ve probably thought, ‘That looks really fun.’ Northern Virginia wineries welcome you to live your own Lucy moment with real grape-stomping experiences that blend tradition, fun, and a little squishy between the toes. You’ll be sure to have a grape time.

The Winery at Bull Run

Step back in time at The Winery at Bull Run’s American History Day on August 30, where you can explore Civil War-era history. In addition to visiting the winery’s museum, guests can learn about winemaking and get in on an old-fashioned grape stomp to the sounds of live music. 15950 Route 29, Centreville, free admission

Bluemont Vineyard

Bluemont Vineyards offers grape stomping events Saturdays and Sundays in September. Start with a brief tutorial before you plunge into the barrel and stomp away, creating your keepsake grape-stained tea towel as a memento. Tickets include one welcome glass of seasonal sangria or a nonalcoholic beverage, the grape stomping experience, and the keepsake tea towel. 18755 Foggy Bottom Rd., Bluemont, $29

Veramar Vineyard

Head to Veramar Vineyard for its annual Rock the Grapes Festival on October 3, featuring grape stomping, live music, and wine. Guests can taste wines and participate in activities including “wine pong” and cornhole, spin the wheel of “wine fortune,” and belly dancing. The event also brings together local food, beverage, and artisan vendors from Clarke County. 905 Quarry Rd., Berryville, $15
