The Washington Capitals are turning 50 this year, and to celebrate, the team is hosting a Street Hockey Extravaganza on November 16 at George Mason University’s Eagle Bank Arena.
The co-ed event is a youth ball hockey tournament, where kids aged 12 to 14 can play, whether or not they have experience with the game. There will be 14 teams of four players each, and each team will play at least four 10-minute games.
This event is a callback to when the team held the Capitals Youth Hockey Extravaganza, the largest street hocket clinic in existence, in the 1970s, according to a news release. In 1975, more than 2,000 children between 9 and 14 participated in the games. At the time, it took place at the Capital Centre in Maryland.
The goal back then was to “celebrate the growing interest in street and ice hockey in the region.” The Capitals continued to host the event through the 1970s.
This year’s event in Fairfax runs from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Interested players can register online as a team or as an individual, to be placed on a team. Participation is free.
