Union Kitchen Has Opened in Ballston Quarter

Local brands are on the menu at this restaurant stocked by a food and beverage accelerator.

By Alice Levitt August 5, 2020 at 4:00 pm

Union Kitchen, already a popular name in DC, opened its first location in Virginia, at Ballston Quarter in Arlington, on Aug. 3. Though casual food is served at the counter, Union Kitchen isn’t just a restaurant or convenience store.

Union Kitchen stores are part of an accelerator for food and beverage businesses. Since 2012, when the concept began, Union Kitchen has helped 650 area brands launch and grow regionally and even nationally. Local food lovers may recognize names such as Compass Coffee, Snacklins, Eat Pizza, Mas Panadas and Swapples.

Breakfast focuses on sandwiches, both classics like bacon or sausage with egg and cheese, but also less common fillings like bacon, egg and goat cheese or tomato, egg and avocado. Diners can pick if they prefer their sandwiches on a bun from local bakery Poppy’s Stuffed Bagels or on a waffle bun made by accelerator member Walt’s Waffles.

The lunch menu is much larger than the abbreviated breakfast offerings. Sandwiches are divided into “Our Faves!” and classics sections. They include stuffings meat eaters will crave, like meatball or Buffalo chicken in 8 Myles Pineapple Buffalo sauce, but also vegan Brussel Hustle, which features Brussels sprouts, hummus, cucumber, tomato and mixed greens with chimichurri on a ciabatta roll. The rest of the menu focuses on healthy bowls on mixed greens, grilled cheese, pizza, empanadas and wings. Customers can even find local drinks to pair with their meal, including healthy sips from Everyday Kombucha.

The Ballston Union Kitchen is open seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. // 4102 Wilson Blvd.,
Arlington
