El Mercat Bar de Tapas in Arlington’s Westpost at National Landing has permanently closed after just one year. The Spanish fusion tapas restaurant announced the closure Thursday on Instagram.
“Last night we went dark, and it is with deep sadness and regret that we announce the permanent closure of our restaurant in Arlington, VA after just one year in business,” the post says. “This decision was not an easy one. Economic challenges, unexpected construction costs, delays in opening, and slower-than-anticipated sales ultimately forced us to close our doors.”
Chef George Rodrigues opened the first El Mercat Bar de Tapas location in Rockville in 2022. The National Landing restaurant opened in September 2025.
Our food critic reviewed the Arlington restaurant in February and noted that, “there’s a part of me that’s eager to see what else Rodrigues has in his bag of tricks. He’s from the north of Brazil, near the Amazon, and says he’d love to share the little-seen dishes of his home region with DMV diners.”
In his post, Rodrigues thanked customers and staff. “To every customer who walked through our doors, supported us, celebrated with us, and believed in us: Thank you. Your support, kindness, and loyalty meant the world to us. To our incredible staff: Thank you for your hard work, dedication, and commitment. You made this experience so special, and we will always be grateful for you.”
