Where to Throw Axes and Drink Beer in NoVA and DC

Axe-throwing lodges have been popping up all over the country in the past few years. We scoped out the local spots where you can unleash your inner lumberjack.

Updated June 29, 2022. You don’t need a beard and a flannel shirt to enjoy the craze that’s taken over the country. We’re talking about axe-throwing. The sport is exactly what it sounds like: Competitors throw an axe at a target, attempting to hit the bull’s-eye.

Event centers for axe-throwing have been popping up across the nation, with a few opening in DC and one in NoVA in recent years. Lumberjack attire not required.

Autobahn Indoor Speedway & Events

The first axe-throwing location in Northern Virginia, Autobahn Axe Throwing welcomes walk-ins, private parties, and booked reservations for time in its throwing bays. It’s also the host of regional league competitions for the World Axe Throwing League. The location serves alcohol, but is also BYOB-friendly. 45448 E. Severn Way, Ste. 150, Sterling

Bad Axe Throwing

Located in DC (with several other locations throughout the country), Bad Axe Throwing doesn’t require appointments or group minimums for participation. Guests can also book ahead of time and schedule private events with a dedicated lane and coach just for their party. 2419 Evarts St. NE, Washington, DC

Axes and O’s

Axes and O’s offers eight axe-throwing lanes, a beer and wine bar with light bites available, arcade games, and more. While the concept focuses on axe-throwing, the 8,700-square-foot site is unlike any axe-throwing business in the region. Instead of the typical lumberjack-esque atmosphere with wood-based decor and surrounding picnic tables, the business features an industrial steampunk theme and music blaring through the speakers. 21680 Ridgetop Cir., Ste. 125, Sterling

Kraken Axes

Tired of bowling and darts? Head to Kraken Axes to throw axes instead. Kraken offers party reservations, private events, free throw sessions, and a weekly league. The brand also has a mobile throwing range that comes to you for events in the DC Metro area. 840 E St. NW, Washington, DC
