Springfield Lego Display Showcases DC’s Cherry Blossoms

Stop by the Lego Discovery Center to see a diorama of the city in peak bloom.

From the Tidal Basin to Northern Virginia, cherry trees are showing off their pretty pink blossoms all around the region. And through April 30, you can see them in miniature at the Lego Discovery Center in Springfield.

To celebrate springtime, hundreds of Lego cherry blossoms have been added to the Mini World attraction. This colorful display — made of about 1.5 million Lego bricks — features a diorama of some of DC’s most iconic landmarks.

Discovery Center master model builder Somaya Zaheereldeen spent 32 hours building the blossoms out of 9,800 Lego bricks. The blossoms were then “planted” throughout Mini World — just in time to coincide with the real-life peak bloom.

Throughout the display, minifigures are “strolling down the reflecting pool and soaking up the sun taking in the sites,” according to the Discovery Center.

The annual display is timed around the cherry blossoms bloom, with fresh touches added each year.

In addition to the Mini World attraction, the Lego Discovery Center offers activities like a 4D cinema, an interactive “Imagination Express,” and a workshop to learn about building Lego creations. Tickets start at about $28 per person.
