It’s July, and that means its peach season. Peach picking is a great activity for the whole family; temperatures are usually a few degrees cooler out in the country, the views are always stunning, and it doesn’t get more ‘farm-to-table’ than this. Check the farm’s website or call to make sure their orchards are open and have juicy fruit ready for picking before heading out.
Great Country Farms
In addition to peach picking, this farm also hosts a Peach Fuzztival in mid-July, which will include activities like a pie-eating contest and water games, as well as food and drinks such as peach slushies and peach ice cream. Adults will also love the peach cider. Visit the website to buy tickets for peach picking starting in July, and for tickets to the peach-themed festival. 34345 Snickersville Turnpike, Bluemont
Hartland Orchard
In addition to peach plucking, this lovely orchard also offers tractor rides for the kids, and has an adjacent market with local produce, including honey from the farm’s hive, and jars of their produce — even tomato sauce — packed at its peak freshness so you can enjoy the flavors of summer back home year-round. If you have an immediate craving for sweets, however, you can also enjoy fresh donuts, candied apples, and other treats. 3064 Hartland Ln., Markham
Hollin Farms
Hollin Farms first opened their peach tree orchard to visitors picking their own fruit almost 20 years ago. Since then, the number of fruits they grow on their sprawling lands has grown to include (among others) apples, blueberries, and cherries. The peach orchards are still among the most popular and fruit is plentiful, so whether you’re looking to bite into them straight away or use them for a delicious cobbler later, you’ve come to the right place. 1524 Snowden Rd., Delaplane
Stribling Orchard
Come for the peaches, stay for the views. This sixth-generation family farm has picnic tables set up on their property that give you the best view of the Blue Ridge Mountain landscape. If you visit on the weekend, their Harvest House will have fresh pies and pastries, so you don’t even need to bring your own snacks (although you’re welcome to bring along your own picnic if you choose!). 11587 Poverty Hollow Ln., Markham
