Three years ago, the term “coastal grandmother” was coined by TikToker Lex Nicoleta. And since then, the trend has taken the internet by storm. The style is reminiscent of styling of the sets and characters in Nancy Meyers movies like Something’s Gotta Give, Father of the Bride, and The Parent Trap (think big, gorgeous kitchens, blooming flower arrangements, and lots of beige tones).
If you’re looking to foster some hobbies reminiscent of a coastal grandmother, here are six options and NoVA places to give them a try.
Gardening
If you’ve started to become an avid gardener, this family owned and operated center knows its stuff. It’s been around since 1962, after all. The Fairfax location offers multiple varieties of plants like Japanese maples and the ubiquitous rhododendrons. Betty’s also carries one of the biggest collections of azaleas in the U.S. (hence the name). 12507 Rte. 29, Fairfax
Flower Arranging
If you’ve coveted the breathtaking bouquets in movies like Something’s Gotta Give and The Parent Trap, Helen Olivia Flowers welcomes all skill levels to their public, private, and virtual workshops. Each flower arranging class has a different theme. Upcoming options include peonies, tropical flowers, succulents, and more. 1519 Leslie Ave., Alexandria

Baking
Make like Meryl in It’s Complicated and try Knead & Know’s croissant making class. There are also classes in bagel making, homemade pizza, holiday breads, sourdough, and rye bread. Instructor and founder Melinda Friend has been rolling pie crust since age 6. 6322 Hopewell Rd., The Plains
Scrapbooking
Another great hobby perfect for the coastal grandmother vibe is scrapbooking. GoldensHill Papercrafts in Clifton offers scrapbooking classes, including one on July 22. Attendees will learn how to use embellishments in a new way. Beach photos are encouraged. 12644 Chapel Rd., Clifton
Calligraphy
Learn calligraphy fit for Annie Banks’ wedding in Father of the Bride with Peach & Paperie’s beginner workshops in the DC area. The calligrapher partnered with Sip & Script to give 90-minute classes at local places like Ms. Peacock’s Champagne Lounge and Immigrant Food in Arlington, and Caboose Commons in Fairfax. Canning
Visiting local farmer’s markets
If you’re into making your own jam, or perhaps trying your hand at homemade pickles, visit one of the area’s many farmers markets. Find a local market and grab all the produce and supplies you need to become an expert canner. Multiple locations
