Trying a new hobby is a popular New Year’s resolution, and for good reason. Filling your free time with an activity you love is a great way to feel more fulfilled, meet new people, and learn new things.
Plus, a hobby can actually help your health and well-being in the long run. A 2023 study in Nature Medicine found that individuals who participated in leisure time activities reported better health, fewer signs of depression, and higher life satisfaction than those who had no hobbies.
If you’re in search of something new to do in 2025, we’ve rounded up some options in and around NoVA to help get you started.
Dance Your Heart Out
Dance class isn’t just an after-school activity for kids. Adults can get in on the fun too, with lessons at area studios that teach ballet, hip-hop, ballroom styles, and more. AVA Dance Company has multiple studios in the area that offer high-energy sessions that double as a heart-pumping workout, and Elegant Dancing in Fairfax offers lessons in tango, swing, salsa, and more. It’s a great way to get your body moving, and as an added bonus, you’ll have some impressive moves to bust out the next time you’re at a wedding.
Get Knitting
Want to make your own scarves, hats, and blankets, but can’t quite get the hang of knitting needles on your own? Fibre Space in Alexandria offers courses that teach you to knit or crochet, no matter your level of expertise.
Find a Runner’s High
A fitness goal doesn’t have to be a solitary pursuit. You can get into the habit of running — or improve your times if you’re training for a race this year — by joining one of NoVA’s running clubs. There are goal-oriented clubs with professional coaches like the NOVA Running Club, and more casual gatherings like the Lake Anne Brew House Beer Run Club.
Turn a New Page
Want to read more in 2025? Join a book club at one of NoVA’s independent bookstores. Options include a mystery group at One More Page Books, a historical fiction club at Bards Alley, and a “bad romance” book club at Old Town Books. Choose your favorite genre, or branch out and try something new. It’s a fun way to meet new people and have in-depth conversations on everything literary.
Laugh It Up
Come out of your shell and learn to captivate an audience with comedy. Popular comedy club DC Improv hosts classes for beginners and intermediate-level comedians, so you can learn the best ways to crack jokes and get laughs.
Learn a New Language
Whether you’ve got big travel plans for the new year or you just want to push yourself to develop a new skill, learning a new language is a worthy challenge. With the help of NoVA-area language classes like Berlitz Tysons Corner Language Center, plus online resources like Mango that are often available through the library, you’ll be fluent in no time.
