Here’s a brief look at what Torpedo Factory, Arlington Arts Center, NextStop Theatre and others have planned for the month of April:
Arts
All month (March 31-April 30), Del Ray Artisans will show Breaking the Glass Ceiling – The Sky’s the Limit, with work that explores the idea of overcoming obstacles set by society. The Torpedo Factory will celebrate the growth that comes with the arrival of spring at its Three-Dimensional Views show (March 21-April 23), which features sculptures, bas-relief and vessels. Likewise, Torpedo Factory will pay homage to all the animals that come out of hiding this time of year at its Round About: Carousel of Critters show (April 3-30). Until May 7, Torpedo Factory will also display Eric Johnson’s photography, which captures Mono Lake and the Salton Sea in California, and from April 1-May 21, Torpedo will gather works from 22 artists in the Target Gallery exploring Ephemera—objects that capture the passing nature of time and memory. At Gallery Underground, from April 3-28, artist Laura Clerici will show her Orthodox iconography-inspired work in Divine Light. Members of the Philadelphia artist collective Grizzly Grizzly will show their work at Arlington Arts Center‘s Future Imperfect Continuous exhibit (April 8-June 11), spanning mediums but tied together in how it addresses time—past, present and future—and its dark tone. Starting April 21 and lasting all summer, Greater Reston Arts Center will present the work of painter, sculptor and mixed media artist Radcliffe Bailey in The Great Dismal Swamp.
Theater
NextStop Theatre will show Boeing Boeing (April 6-30), a story about a 1960s bachelor engaged to three airline stewardesses and the chaotic day they all arrive in town at the same time. The circus and zoo meet April 8 at the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Popovich Comedy Pet Theater, where clowns and acrobats dazzle with the furry stars of the show: cats, dogs, geese, parrots and even a pony. Next, the circus heads into the kitchen for Cuisine & Confessions (April 8-9) at George Mason University’s Center for the Arts, as Montreal-based group The 7 Fingers of the Hand uses acrobatics to tell family stories that happen while making a meal together. On April 9, the Asaph Dance Ensemble will perform its Spring Celebration—combining classic and modern ballet—at Merchant Hall. Infinity Stage brings the life and times and loves of Benedict Arnold to Lee Center in Old Town Alexandria in the musical-comedy Revolutionary Gentleman from April 13-15, and L.A. Theatre Works interprets Abby Mann’s Judgment at Nuremberg for a radio-style production at the Center for the Arts documenting the trials of Nazis for their roles in the Holocaust. Little ones who just fell in love with Beauty and the Beast after seeing Disney’s recent live-action remake will want to see Center for the Arts’ stage rendition of the story at Pied Piper Theatre from April 29-30. Toward the end of the month (April 22-May 13), the Little Theatre of Alexandria will debut its latest production, The Fabulous Lipitones, another musical-comedy about a barber shop quartet.
