In the week ahead, Northern Virginia Magazine‘s editors are looking forward to trying Captain Gregory’s new tasting menu and starting a 2017 reading challenge.
Captain Gregory’s Tasting Menu
March 1
After a slow roll-out last month, cocktail lounge Captain Gregory’s debuts Wednesday a daily three-course, small-plate tasting menu. Past dishes included Hamachi crudo, braised pork belly and a white-chocolate cheesecake with beet root puree. –SG // Inside Sugar Shack Donuts: 804 N. Henry St., Alexandria
Listening to Bleached’s New EP
March 3
In 2013, one album I couldn’t get enough of was Ride Your Heart, the debut effort of Bleached, a Los Angeles trio shilling infectious, sun-drenched garage-rock. On their follow-up, Welcome the Worms, they turned up the volume and pace, and if the title track from their forthcoming Can You Deal? EP is any indication, they’re maintaining that forward momentum just in time for the unseasonably warm temperatures here in NoVA. –BK
Scoping Out a New Coffee Shop
I spotted a new little shop after my grocery run last week and have been meaning to stop in. Chill Zone looks tiny from the outside, but the Yelp photos look promising, so I’ll be seeing for myself this weekend. –WD // Chill Zone: 2442 N. Harrison St., Arlington
Starting Our Gardens
The arrival of March 1 (combined with recent warm temps) means spring is nearly upon us. To prepare, I’ll research the best flowers to plant in my teeny front yard—step one of my annual gardening battle with the neighbors. –EB
Yearly Reading Challenge Begins
I’m not very good about making New Year’s resolutions, but I do like to think about the year ahead and what I would like to accomplish. This year, albeit a little late, I want to find more personal time for reading. While I read a ton of books from local authors for our Bookshelf column, I also want to revisit the classics. I found a list of 100 best books of all time that I’m basing my list off of, and my first order just arrived. After work each day, I plan on getting to know Virginia Woolf’s prose a little better. –LN
