9 Recently Closed Retail Shops Throughout Northern Virginia

From locally owned businesses to big name chains, these stores are closing up shop.

As we head into the new year, some of our favorite shops won’t be there to celebrate with us. From indie bookshops to big-name box stores, here are nine Northern Virginia stores that have recently closed or plan to close soon.

A Thousand Stories

This recently opened bookstore had to shut down operations after just two years in operation. The building was supposed to close due to a planned development in downtown Herndon that was due to start construction this year. That plan has since been scratched, but the bookstore still made the decision to permanently close. 750 Center St., Herndon

Bellies & Babies

The children’s consignment shop served its last customer on December 15. The owner of the Alexandria store — which housed kids and maternity clothing, books, and more — was looking to sell the business to a new owner, but after a deal couldn’t come together, a decision was made not to renew the lease, according to ALXNow. Just this week, Del Ray announced that the Del Ray Farmhouse Market & Garden will take over the former retail shop. 1913 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria

Dick’s Sporting Goods

The Manassas location of this nationwide sporting goods store shuttered at the start of the new year. There are still two locations in Prince William County, with one in Gainesville and one in Dale City. 10800 Sudley Manor Dr., Manassas

Giant Food

By the end of the month, shoppers of the Ashburn Village Giant Food will need to find a new spot to grab groceries. The grocery store announced it will be closing on January 30 after it was determined Giant could “adequately serve this community through several other nearby Giant Food locations as well as our online services Giant Pickup and delivery.” 43670 Greenway Corporate Dr., Ashburn

Hooray for Books!

Another bookstore has left NoVA’s landscape. The Alexandria children’s bookstore closed at the end of 2024 after its landlord decided not to renew the store’s lease. Hooray for Books opened in 2007 and had expanded to include adult and YA sections. 1555 King St., Alexandria

Kohl’s

There’s only one week to shop this Kohl’s location before it goes out of business on January 18. A Lidl grocery store is set to take over part of the space, subletting the remaining space to two other tenants in the future. 2100 Centreville Rd., Herndon

Lou Lou Boutiques

After closing its Reston location in early 2024, the local boutique announced it was closing its Mosaic District shop in December. The accessories focused shop was one of the first stores to open at the Fairfax outdoor shopping district back in 2012. The store still has NoVA locations in Alexandria and Middleburg. 2910 District Ave., Ste. 130, Fairfax

Party City

It was a shock to many when Party City announced its plan to close all locations. That includes the nine stores located throughout Northern Virginia. While the company hasn’t announced when it’s officially closing, all of its locations are offering sales of up to 75 percent off. Multiple area locations

The Hour

The vintage glassware shop officially closed its doors in November. The Hour served the Alexandria community for 15 years, selling vintage barware and glassware. While the physical location is closed, the shop is still offloading its remaining inventory online. 1015 King St., Alexandria
