Jump the Border for Maryland’s Tax-Free Week

The Free State is making clothing and shoes that are priced up to $100 tax-free right before the kids go back to school.

By Colleen Kelleher August 10, 2023 at 2:49 pm

Since Virginia is not having its tax-free weekend, you may want to head to Maryland to buy the kids their back-to-school clothing. Maryland holds its tax-free week Sunday, August 13, to Saturday, August 19.

Clothing and footwear up to $100 will be tax-free. Only the first $40 of backpacks or bookbags is exempt.

No taxes would be paid on the following:

  • Sweaters
  • Shirts
  • Slacks
  • Jeans
  • Dresses
  • Underwear
  • Belts
  • Shoes and boots

Items included in the list are things you children might need for their activities: leotards and tights and martial arts attire.

The Maryland comptroller’s office spells out exactly what qualifies in this list online.

There are exemptions. Don’t look for the 6 percent tax break on these things:

  • Jewelry, watches, and watchbands
  • Handbags
  • Handkerchiefs, scarves, and ties
  • Umbrellas
  • Headbands
  • Belt buckles
  • Specialty items for sports, such as football pads
