Since Virginia is not having its tax-free weekend, you may want to head to Maryland to buy the kids their back-to-school clothing. Maryland holds its tax-free week Sunday, August 13, to Saturday, August 19.
Clothing and footwear up to $100 will be tax-free. Only the first $40 of backpacks or bookbags is exempt.
No taxes would be paid on the following:
- Sweaters
- Shirts
- Slacks
- Jeans
- Dresses
- Underwear
- Belts
- Shoes and boots
Items included in the list are things you children might need for their activities: leotards and tights and martial arts attire.
The Maryland comptroller’s office spells out exactly what qualifies in this list online.
There are exemptions. Don’t look for the 6 percent tax break on these things:
- Jewelry, watches, and watchbands
- Handbags
- Handkerchiefs, scarves, and ties
- Umbrellas
- Headbands
- Belt buckles
- Specialty items for sports, such as football pads
