If you’ve only whizzed by Fredericksburg while heading down I-95, it’s time for a little field trip. A block away on Princess Anne Street, peek into the stately courtyard, home of the Fredericksburg Area Museum. Continue up to Lewis Street, enjoying the impressive buildings in a variety of styles—Romanesque, Victorian, Federal, and Gothic Revival. Some date back to Colonial times and were used as hospitals for wounded soldiers during the Civil War. While things are oriented around the town’s historic charm, evenings in Fredericksburg often turn buoyant. That’s because it’s a college town—home of the University of Mary Washington. Visitors will relish the artsy vibe, thanks to the galleries and art on every wall. If you love interesting, original pieces, you won’t have trouble finding them here, with everything from vintage to modern, metals to woodwork.
