12 Things to Do in Fredericksburg That Put It on the Map as a Destination

History, honey wine, hundreds of ice cream flavors in one shop, and more reasons to visit.

If you’ve only whizzed by Fredericksburg while heading down I-95, it’s time for a little field trip. The burg comes alive on the weekends: Stroll down Caroline Street, in the heart of historic downtown, past shops with enticing window dressing. A block away on Princess Anne Street, peek into the stately courtyard, home of the Fredericksburg Area Museum. Continue up to Lewis Street, enjoying the impressive buildings in a variety of styles—Romanesque, Victorian, Federal, and Gothic Revival. Some date back to Colonial times and were used as hospitals for wounded soldiers during the Civil War. While things are oriented around the town’s historic charm, evenings in Fredericksburg often turn buoyant. That’s because it’s a college town—home of the University of Mary Washington. Visitors will relish the artsy vibe, thanks to the galleries and art on every wall. If you love interesting, original pieces, you won’t have trouble finding them here, with everything from vintage to modern, metals to woodwork.

COVET

The talented owners behind the Ponshop Studio and Gallery are known for their vibrant murals around town and for designing skateboards for famous customers. The shop sells locally themed art, handmade jewelry, and hand-thrown pottery. 712 Caroline St., Fredericksburg

TASTE

The popular brunch destination Fork ’N’ Biscuit is best known for buttery biscuit sandwiches, but the Belgian waffles with custom toppings, the fried pimiento cheese balls, and the Instagrammable Bloody Marys are also first-rate. 715 Caroline St., Fredericksburg

LICK

Challenge yourself to choose just one of the blended ice cream flavors at Abner B’s Ice Cream. But it won’t be easy—the shop creates a cornucopia of options (up to 325 and counting). Some recent delights: Lemon Cookies and Cream, and Banana Chocolate Chip Granola Crunch. 821 Caroline St., Fredericksburg

CHARM

Step back in time to 1867, when Goolrick’s Pharmacy and Soda Fountain first opened its doors. Not much has changed on the menu since then. Belly up to the soda fountain for a grilled cheese or BLT, and don’t forget the frosty milkshake. 901 Caroline St., Fredericksburg

SHOP

You’ll want to update your entire closet when you browse the racks at Pye & Co., which carries easy-to-wear brands like ASTR, Pistola, and LUXE. It also stocks trendy Anecdote candles, succulents in interesting planters, jewelry by Mishky, and cuddly baby rompers. 905 Caroline St., Fredericksburg

SAVOR

At Foode + Mercantile, co-founded by Beth Black, Top Chef alums Joy Crump and Stacy Cogswell serve sublime Southern food. Among the best-loved is Rosie’s Chicken, a crispy breast topped with Duke’s mayo and pickles. 900 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg

ADMIRE

You’ll see trees in a new way after spending time in Fraser Wood Elements. Everyone loves the maple and walnut cutting boards, cherry-wood votive centerpieces, rawhide rugs, and DIY birdhouse projects. 1023 Caroline St., Fredericksburg

AMAZE

Inside Hugh Mercer Apothecary Shop, a pharmacy that dates back to 1772, learn how Dr. Mercer tended to the citizens of Fredericksburg. You’ll either be aghast or fascinated by a live demonstration of his remedies, including lancets and oozing leeches. 1020 Caroline St., Fredericksburg

INDULGE

Stop in for a bite at Eileen’s Bakery and Cafe, housed in a beautiful yellow church dating back to 1833. 1115 Caroline St., Fredericksburg

SIP

An antique gas station was renovated to house Haley’s Honey Meadery. In good weather, they raise the garage doors and have outdoor seating. 1600 Princess Anne St., Fredericksburg

DISCOVER

Visit the home owned by George Washington’s mother. A guided tour of Mary Washington House, led by a costumed interpreter, offers a peek into the lifestyle of the late-1700s European gentry. 1200 Charles St., Fredericksburg

PRIZE

Sixty juried artists have studios at LibertyTown Arts Workshop. Shop for quirky and fine objects; treasures include hand-knit apparel, metal sculptures, and fiber dolls. 916 Liberty St., Fredericksburg
