For most families in Northern Virginia, whether you have a nervous kindergartner or an incoming college student, August is a month of preparation. From the new clothing to the essential organizers, there’s a lot you need to purchase in order to ensure your child has a successful (and relaxed) start to the school year.

This month, you have the chance to prepare early for what’s to come, thanks to Virginia’s tax-free weekend, happening from Friday, Aug. 2 to Sunday, Aug. 4.

Throughout this special holiday, you can stock up on any qualifying items—school supplies, clothing, shoes, emergency preparation items and Energy Star or WaterSense appliances—without paying the local sales tax of 5.3%. Prior to heading out the door, be sure to check out the various price limits for each type of product, which are listed on the Virginia Tax website.

To make things a little easier for you, we’ve compiled a list of stores in the area where you can splurge for your little ones, and maybe even pick something up for yourself, too.
