U.S. Sen. Mark Warner (D-Va.) has introduced a bill specifically designed to prevent government shutdowns in the future, called the Stop STUPIDITY Act. STUPIDITY stands for Shutdowns Transferring Unnecessary Pain and Inflicting Damage In The Coming Years, and the bill would ensure the government remains funded in the event Congress and the executive branch can’t reach a deal on the federal budget.

As the shutdown continues, Fairfax County officials are considering ways to provide further assistance to those impacted. Proposals made at a recent Board of Supervisors meeting included delaying certain car tax payments, requesting leniency from utility companies for area residents and how to fund housing assistance services if the shutdown continues.
