As guests prepare to flock to Shenandoah National Park for fall foliage and mountain views, the park is adding automated entry stations at each of its four main entrances.
According to a social media post, the stations will sell seven-day entrance passes for cars, motorcycles, bikes, and pedestrians. The park will only accept credit and debit card payment.
Funded by the Shenandoah National Park Trust, these stations will allow visitors to enter the park outside of regular operating hours when staff members are not present.
Visitors with an existing pass or receipt can scan the barcode to open the gate. Annual and lifetime passes will be available for purchase at staff entrance booths.
The stations will also “strengthen emergency response efforts,” according to the post. Rangers will be able to close the gates remotely when road conditions are hazardous.
