7 Japanese Restaurants to Satisfy Any Craving

Japanese cuisine is about more than just sushi — discover robust soups, decadently fluffy soufflé pancakes, and curries with a kick at these NoVA restaurants.

Just a few years ago, Japanese food in our region meant little beyond sushi and teriyaki. In the past half decade, that’s changed dramatically. Whether you’re looking for fun sippers, colorful sweet treats, or exceptional savory bites, you’ll now find them right in Northern Virginia at these Japanese restaurants.

Genki Izakaya

Youthful Japanophiles gather here for kushiyaki (grilled skewers), tornado omurice, and udon in creamy cod roe sauce. Those old enough for a tipple will enjoy the creative cocktails, such as the Ichigo Cloud, which features an image from anime classic Spirited Away atop a fluffy layer of whipped egg white. 9508 Fairfax Blvd., Fairfax

Gyu Shige Japanese BBQ

The first American location of this Japanese chain opened three years ago in the Mosaic District. Fans of Korean barbecue will have some idea of what to anticipate from Japanese yakiniku, but the showmanship at this temple to grilled meat has a way of exceeding expectations. Don’t miss the A5 Miyazaki wagyu cuts, presented simply yet powerfully with Himalayan salt, truffle salt, and freshly grated wasabi. 2980 District Ave., Ste. 100, Fairfax

Our favorite place in NoVA for a steamy bowl of Japanese soup is also a link in a Japanese-born chain. The noodles have an ideally al dente bite and the broths, whether tonkotsu- or miso-based, are robustly flavorful in a way that few ramen soups are. That’s because it takes a minimum of 20 hours in the pot before broth makes its way into diners’ bowls. 1636 Boro Pl., McLean

Karé Bar

This year-old comfort food haven is the place for Japanese curry. The yoshoku (Western-inspired Japanese food) delights here don’t end with the aromatic sauce, but make it a point to try at least one of the craving-inducing dishes. Our favorites are the donkatsu curry and the hamburger steak curry, but there’s an argument to be made for the curry udon soup featuring vegetable tempura. 13912 Metrotech Dr., Chantilly

It’s rare to find Japanese restaurants in NoVA that focus on just one region. Here, get a taste of Okinawa courtesy of native son and co-owner Futoshi “Tao” Takazato. So while you can order a deluxe chirashi meal served in a pair of boats, you’d be even better advised to spring for dishes like pork knuckle soup and green tea–flavored cold soba noodles with tempura, which you likely won’t see elsewhere. 238 W. Broad St., Falls Church

Looking for Japanese soufflé pancakes? In our region, you’ll only find the airy delights right here. The menu has recently expanded to include curry dishes, but it’s key to save room (you won’t need much) for the sweet treats. Basic flavors include strawberry and matcha, but new additions like chocolate-banana and purple sweet potato look awfully appealing. 14215 Centreville Sq., Ste. V, Centreville

Planning to splurge on an omakase feast? It’s not necessary to venture across the bridge to empty your wallet. You’ll get all the gold leaf, wagyu, and uni you can stomach for a better price right on the Falls Church–Arlington border. Sit at the counter for a decadent experience that passes by like the dream for which the restaurant is named. 2121 N. Westmoreland St., Ste. A-2, Arlington
