Sneak a Drink at 5 Northern Virginia Speakeasys

These hidden bars are redefining the NoVA cocktail scene.

By Dawn Klavon October 3, 2025 at 7:00 am

Behind unmarked doors, down nondescript hallways and tucked into hidden corners, Northern Virginia’s nightlife is quietly reinventing itself. A wave of new speakeasys is popping up across the region, from hush-hush lounges behind donut shops to unmarked doors leading to Prohibition-era charm. These speakeasy spots are drawing in locals who want more than just a drink — they want an experience. Here are some of the newest and most intriguing speakeasys in Northern Virginia.

Saki

Not yet open, Saki is a two-level Japanese restaurant with a secret twist. Downstairs, guests will find sushi and Japanese fare overseen by Michelin-starred Chef Masaaki Uchino. Upstairs, hidden behind a faux Japanese vending machine door, lies a late-night speakeasy lounge. Expect creative cocktails, sake, and an atmosphere of exclusivity. 2055 15th St. N., Arlington

Bar 86

Bar 86 is tucked behind Café du Soleil in Old Town and channels a tiki-tinged speakeasy vibe. Discover creative cocktails crafted in an artfully designed atmosphere. It’s vintage, it’s modern — it’s memorable. The intimate spot focuses on cozy ambiance and imaginative drinks. Seasonal cocktails meet globally inspired small plates, with flavors drawn from Morocco, Polynesia, and France. Coming soon. 215 S. Union St., Alexandria

Heirloom

Hidden away inside Open Road Distilling Co. at Reston Town Center, Heirloom is accessible through a nondescript doorway that ushers guests into an intimate escape. Visitors can savor award-winning craft cocktails and upscale cuisine in a setting that feels like a hidden retreat amid Reston Town Center’s hustle and bustle. It’s a perfect balance of refinement and secrecy. 12025 Town Square St., Reston

Captain Gregory’s

Captain Gregory’s hides in plain sight as a travel agency. Just look for “Captain Gregory’s Boat Tours and Excursions.” Once you slip past the unassuming entrance, you’ll find yourself in an intimate tiki-inspired bar where cocktails are bold and inventive. With its mix of playful cocktails and comfortable setting, Captain Gregory’s is one of Alexandria’s hidden gems. 804 N. Henry St., Alexandria

Naisho Room

Guests are discovering The Naisho Room — a hidden cocktail speakeasy discreetly tucked inside The Watermark Hotel. Inspired by the intimate lounges of Tokyo, The Naisho Room is accessible through hints in its social media. The experience is by invitation only, with applications reviewed individually. Those selected are personally escorted to the clandestine lounge, greeted by soft candlelight, curated playlists, layered textures, and skyline views set the mood. 1825 Capital One Dr., Tysons
