Try These 5 German Restaurants in NoVA for a Taste of Old World European Charm

From German-style bars to authentic German dining experiences, enjoy traditional European fare at these local eateries.

By Haley Huchler February 7, 2023 at 1:41 pm

German cuisine is one that frequently flies under the radar. While most people might have a favorite Thai takeout or a familiar Italian bistro, not many could name their standby authentic German restaurant. However, that doesn’t mean they’re not out there, just waiting to be discovered.

From German-style bars to authentic German dining experiences, there is an abundance of Old World European establishments to try in NoVA. If you’re craving traditional dishes like jägerschnitzel — breaded pork cutlets drowned in a creamy mushroom gravy — or käsespätzle — a classic comfort food that consists of cheesy noodles and fried onions — these German restaurants will satisfy all your culinary desires.

Döner Bistro Leesburg

For a taste of Germany in downtown Leesburg, check out Döner Bistro. The menu at this authentic establishment features giant pretzels with beer cheese dip, bratwurst, and currywurst. But of course, a classic döner kebab is what the restaurant is named for, and Döner Bistro’s version of the popular dish won’t disappoint with its traditionally Turkish spiced meat, specialty flatbread, and signature salad mix and sauce. Wash it all down with one of Munich’s most popular lagers or a crisp glass of Riesling. 13-C Fairfax St. SE, Leesburg

Euro Bistro Herndon

This classic European restaurant is a community staple, and for good reason — its menu is full of excellent options for German-food lovers everywhere. Stay true to the basics with Euro Bistro’s jägerschnitzel, sauerbraten, or paprika schnitzel. Be sure to order a few sides, because this is where the true feast begins — delight your palate with German potato salad, red cabbage, spaetzle, and sauerkraut. You can’t go wrong by saying yes to dessert and choosing an apple or cherry strudel with vanilla ice cream. Euro Bistro has been a community staple for many years, and newcomers to the restaurant will surely wonder how they ever lived without trying it. 314 Elden St., Herndon

Village Brauhaus Alexandria

Austrian and Bavarian fare are the bread and butter of Village Brauhaus in Alexandria. The neighborhood hangout serves classic German dishes and delightful appetizers. Start off with a giant Bavarian pretzel or potato pancakes, then make your way to the entrées, which include wienerschnitzel, käsespätzle, or Berliner currywurst. Save room for dessert and treat yourself to an apfelstrudel or Black Forest cheesecake. 710 King St., Alexandria

Bronson Bierhall

While it may look like another neighborhood bar, chef Mike Cordero of Bronson Bierhall strives to serve an authentic German-style menu instead of traditional bar food. The menu features six different kinds of soft pretzels, all served with beer cheese and beer mustard. For entrées, enjoy schnitzel with German potato salad and sauerkraut or currywurst served with fries and a housemade curry ketchup. Beers on tap span a satisfying range of German beers and local Virginia brews — the best of both worlds. 4100 Fairfax Dr., Arlington

Old House Cosmopolitan

To travel across time and space to old world Europe, visit Old House Cosmopolitan Grill in Alexandria and enjoy a traditional German meal. You can’t get more classic than its menu, which includes stuffed veal schnitzel, käsespätzle, and chicken jager. Even the starters don’t stray from exemplary German fare, featuring goulash and a wurst platter. The dark and moody interior of the restaurant will make you feel like you’re enjoying your meal in a quaint Bavarian village. 1024 Cameron St., Alexandria
