For a fun, quick getaway that’s close to home but still gives you the opportunity to relax and explore, head to Newport News. It’s about a three- to four-hour drive from NoVA, and it has plenty of attractions that will keep kids and adults alike entertained for a weekend or day trip.
Virginia Living Museum
Head to the Virginia Living Museum, where you’ll get to see over 250 species of animals and plants that are native to Virginia and a planetarium where you can delve into the science of space. Huntington Park
Get a breath of fresh air at Huntington Park, a 60-acre park with a 14,000-square-foot playground for little ones to explore. The park has a public beach and boat ramp, a tennis center, and a rose garden. 361 Hornet Cir., Newport News, free
Historic Hilton Village
This historic village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built around 1918 as housing for shipbuilders during World War I. Now, the area is a walkable shopping district, where visitors will find antiques, home décor, consignment shops, and other locally owned businesses. Ferguson Center for the Arts
After a day of exploring the community, make your way to Christopher Newport University’s Ferguson Center for the Arts for a show. You’ll find captivating musical and theatrical performances, like the musical Come from Away on April 9 and a tribute to Billy Joel and Elton John on April 13.
