A Day Trip to Newport News Is Fun for the Whole Family

Take a mini vacation with these interesting attractions, just a few hours from NoVA.

By Maggie Roth March 27, 2024 at 1:21 pm

For a fun, quick getaway that’s close to home but still gives you the opportunity to relax and explore, head to Newport News. It’s about a three- to four-hour drive from NoVA, and it has plenty of attractions that will keep kids and adults alike entertained for a weekend or day trip.

Virginia Living Museum

Head to the Virginia Living Museum, where you’ll get to see over 250 species of animals and plants that are native to Virginia and a planetarium where you can delve into the science of space. There’s a mix of indoor and outdoor exhibits to explore, including the outdoor Dinosaur Discovery Trail. 524 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News, $19.95–$23.95 for 13 and older, $16.95 for 12 and younger

Huntington Park

Get a breath of fresh air at Huntington Park, a 60-acre park with a 14,000-square-foot playground for little ones to explore. The park has a public beach and boat ramp, a tennis center, and a rose garden. 361 Hornet Cir., Newport News, free

Historic Hilton Village

This historic village, listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was built around 1918 as housing for shipbuilders during World War I. Now, the area is a walkable shopping district, where visitors will find antiques, home décor, consignment shops, and other locally owned businesses. As you shop, stop into The Hilton Creamery for a sweet bite. Warwick Boulevard and Main Street, Newport News

Ferguson Center for the Arts

After a day of exploring the community, make your way to Christopher Newport University’s Ferguson Center for the Arts for a show. You’ll find captivating musical and theatrical performances, like the musical Come from Away on April 9 and a tribute to Billy Joel and Elton John on April 13. The architectural arches outside the theater make a great spot to snap a photo, too. 1 Avenue of the Arts, Newport News, ticket prices vary

FOOD

Of course, no trip is complete without indulging in a good meal. Check out some of these restaurants in the area.

Circa 1918 Kitchen + Bar

This neighborhood staple in the Hilton Village area offers elegant New American cuisine, all in a casual and friendly environment. 10367 Warwick Blvd., Newport News

Harpoon Larry’s Fish House & Oyster Bar

For casual, beachy dining and a menu that’s full of fresh seafood, try Harpoon Larry’s. It’s been operating since 1991, serving up fresh oysters, seafood specialties, and fun cocktails like a signature punch and a rum runner. 621 J. Clyde Morris Blvd., Newport News

Tradition Brewing Co.

A local beer is a good way to get to know a place. Try Tradition for a refreshing brew in a friendly and social atmosphere. The brewery often hosts live music and food trucks — check the events calendar before you go to see what’s planned. 700 Thimble Shoals Blvd., Newport News
