A Scenic, Historic Horse Farm Is on the Market in Purcellville

The scenic property dates back to 1741.

A new opportunity is coming to the real estate market for horse lovers in Loudoun County. Wheatland Farm, a scenic horse farm with a rich history, is now on the market in Purcellville.

The property spans 43 acres of rolling pastures, a fully stocked private lake, a circa-1741 manor house, and equestrian facilities. It’s located at 15158 Berlin Tpk., Purcellville, and is currently listed for sale at $8,400,000.

Wheatland Farm has roots that go back to the colonial era. Its first owners, the Thompson family, were Irish Quakers who helped establish a grist mill and post office in the area that is now Waterford.

According to the listing agent, George Washington and his brother Lawrence knew the Thompsons and helped arrange their land grant. Washington was also said to have stayed at Wheatland several times during the Revolutionary War.

The manor house on the property has six bedrooms and four and a half bathrooms, with a total interior area of 7,727 square feet. From the initial 1741 structure, an addition was added to the home around 1800.

You can still see glimpses of that history inside the home today. It has architectural details that are original to the historic structure, but it’s also been updated with modern features such as a kitchen renovated in 2017.

In addition to the main manor home, the property also has two guest houses, a restored Daniel Boone log cabin, a carriage house executive office, and a “coffee house/schoolroom.”

The property also has several equestrian features. There are indoor and outdoor riding arenas and two barns, including a historic Great Barn and a newly constructed, 18-stall, European-style Pavilion Barn.

Theo Adamstein and Laura Farrell with TTR Sotheby’s International Realty are the co-listing agents for 15158 Berlin Tpk., Purcellville.
