Put your boombox in the air
May 9, 7 p.m.

Maybe it’s because I’m currently on a Cameron Crowe kick, but I think it’s safe to say that there has never been a moment in cinematic history that rivals this one: a trenchcoat-clad Lloyd Dobler wielding his boombox far above his shoulders to blast Peter Gabriel so loud that his forlorn ex-girfriend—so loyal to her scheming father that she’s willing to ignore the pangs of her young heart—is forced to listen from her bedroom as she contemplates the error of her ways. That song. That smug look on Cusack’s face as he subtly nods and tilts his head back to say, “Yeah, you know you f-ed up. Take me back.” Well, if I’m able to make it out to Ashburn’s Alamo Drafthouse this Tuesday night, I’ll get the chance to realize the childhood dream of seeing Say Anything on the big screen. I may bring my guitar and sing “Joe Lies” in the lobby while I wait for the show to start. –EB // Alamo Drafthouse Cinema at One Loudoun: 20575 Easthampton Plaza, Ashburn

College reminiscing
May 9-July 2

Jesus Christ Superstar, the 1973 movie adaptation, was on a recurring loop play at my college townhome (it alternated with Ever After and Sex and the City), so I am definitely getting tickets to the rendition at Signature Theatre (playing through July 2). Some of my favorite songs I can’t wait to hear: “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” and honestly, who doesn’t love the dance from King Herod? –LN

Ryan Adams and Jenny Lewis at Merriweather Post Pavilion
May 12, 6 p.m.

Following his new album, Prisoner, Ryan Adams is coming to the DMV this Friday. Even better: He’s bringing along another of my faves, Jenny Lewis. This isn’t the first time they’ve teamed up; I saw them share a bill in Charlottesville in 2015, a tour that saw them dueting on each other’s songs, but for reasons unknown, they abstained from collaborating during the Charlottesville stop. I’m hoping second time’s a charm and I’ll finally get to witness this firsthand. –BK // Merriweather Post Pavilion: 10475 Little Patuxent Parkway, Columbia, MD

Barnhouse Brewery’s 2017 Music Series
May 13, 3 p.m.

The Leesburg farm brewery (Barnhouse used to operate out of the owners’ house) just launched a free music series, and this weekend it’s local Ken Wenzel. He’s so local he named his album …Beneath Potomac Skies. –SG // Barnhouse Brewery: 43271 Spinks Ferry Road, Leesburg

Streaming The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

It premiered a few weeks ago, but I still haven’t gotten around to watching HBO’s film adaptation of Rebecca Skloot’s book delving into how one woman’s cancer cells led to some of the most important medical breakthroughs of the 20th century, which I read earlier this year and loved. Plus, it’s got Oprah. –WD
