Some Places to Prep for the SAT in Northern Virginia

Help your children minimize the stress of the SAT and potentially increase their scores at one of these Northern Virginia SAT prep centers.

By Editorial August 26, 2016 at 11:00 am

Updated 3/11/2022. Northern Virginia parents are always on the hunt for an SAT prep center that will help their rising junior or senior succeed on a test that plays a key role in college admissions. Don’t let the stress, fear, and cost overwhelm you. Here are just a few of the SAT prep centers in NoVA that can help in the process.

By Katherine Rohloff

Loudoun Test Prep

Loudoun Test Prep’s award-winning SAT prep program groups participants in classes of no more than six other students with similar diagnostic test scores in each section.

“This customized approach targets the needs of the group and accelerates their progress,” says Vinay Bhawnani, co-founder of Loudoun Test Prep. “It also allows students to feel even more comfortable since everyone in the class is roughly at the same level.” If students put in effort and are determined to succeed while working alongside the program, they can see their scores jump 200, 300, and even 400 points. The typical 32-hour course is $1,499.

Students will receive an in-depth review of the SAT content and strategic tips for improving their test stamina. “Additionally, we provide a timeline for testing, guidelines for college applications, and recommendations for anything else academic we feel their student might need,” says Bhawnani.

Georgetown Learning Centers

Georgetown Learning Centers offer three different SAT programs for juniors and seniors.

“One of the most common mistakes we see when students are taking the SAT is preparing in conditions that do not reflect the actual testing environment,” says Ifeoluwa Salako, director of McLean Georgetown Learning Center. “This usually means not practicing well with the calculator or not testing with an answer sheet. These simple but important components of the test can help students mentally prepare and feel in full control of all of the elements on the SAT. We help by encouraging students to take multiple practice tests as if it was the real exam and intentionally identifying which questions students will be expected to answer with a calculator and which ones without the calculator.”

Students can also come to biweekly study lounges and receive a guided hour of additional SAT help, whether it’s detailed instruction, additional worksheets, or catching up on lessons from a missed class. Students who start out with low or mid-range SAT scores can see their results increase as much as 80 points in a single section, while students with higher scores could see their results rise to a perfect 800 points per section.

C2 Education

C2 Education familiarizes students as much as possible with the restructured SAT. “I like to have them so ready that they do not see a single question on the real SAT that they haven’t seen something like before,” says C2’s Anastasia Poliakova.

Each class, a tutor works with an individual student while another two students work on their assignments. The system then rotates so each of the three students has individual time with the tutor. The setup allows for a private learning experience while alleviating the pressure of actually being one-on-one. “The way that our programs work is that no two students have an identical program,” says Poliakova. “We customize the curriculum completely to fit each student’s individual needs.” Cost varies based on the chosen number of hours and sessions per week. An administrator will recommend a tutoring package based on the student’s practice test results. Each student takes a complimentary placement diagnostic test that resembles the real SAT.

Professional Tutoring LLC

For more than 20 years, Professional Tutoring has offered a unique SAT prep program that mirrors training for a marathon: working bit by bit to build up endurance and academic strength. Each class contains up to 15 students and is taught by founder Julia Ross. Students use Ross’ workbook, Conquering the SAT Reasoning Exam with Julia Ross. Professional tutoring guarantees at least a 100- to 150-point increase in their test scores; however, score improvements correlate with the length of the course and can increase up to 250 to 450 points with additional classes. Diagnostics and materials are included in the overall cost.
