Where in Virginia can students get the best high school education? Niche has posted its new 2026 list of the top high schools in Virginia. Several of the top 25 are in the NoVA area, and the list is dominated by private schools.
To create its list, Niche weighed factors including academics, sports, clubs and activities, and college prep.
The No. 1 school on the list was Veritas Collegiate Academy, a private school in Arlington with an A+ grade on Niche. It was followed by McLean’s Madeira school at No. 2, Reston’s Ideaventions at No. 3, Pinnacle Academy in Chantilly at No. 4, and The Potomac School in McLean at No. 5.
The list included both private and public schools. However, only two NoVA public schools made the top 25 list.
Thomas Jefferson High School for Science and Technology, part of Fairfax County Public Schools, was No. 6. The high school also recently ranked as the No. 6 best high school in the country on a list by U.S. News & World Report, and it was at the top of our 2025 ranking of the best public high schools in Northern Virginia.
The other public school was Loudoun County Public Schools’ Independence High School.
Fourteen of the schools (more than half the list) were located in Northern Virginia.
