Inova Alexandria Hospital Recognized for Nursing Excellence

The designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center is one all five Inova hospitals have.

By Colleen Kelleher December 6, 2023 at 10:07 am

Inova Alexandria Hospital has received Magnet designation, an award from the American Nurses Credentialing Center that recognizes nursing excellence.

The designation is one that all five Inova hospitals now have, and it’s an elite distinction. Only about 10 percent of the nation’s 6,100 hospitals achieve it. To attain it, hospitals must undergo a rigorous evaluation process.

Inova said its hospital system is the only one in Virginia and the DC metro area to achieve Magnet status.

“Achieving the prestigious Magnet designation is not just an accolade; it signifies our commitment to providing the highest standard of patient care, fostering a culture of continuous learning, and creating a workplace that empowers our nurses to thrive,” said Francine Barr, chief nursing officer at Inova Alexandria Hospital, in a news release. “Together, we will continue to elevate the standards of nursing care and positively impact the lives of the patients we serve.”

Maureen Sintich, chief nurse executive for Inova, said, “Clinical excellence, unwavering dedication and commitment to exceptional patient care are the cornerstones of Magnet designation. This achievement is a testament to the Inova Alexandria Hospital nurses and the nurses at all five Inova hospitals who, each day, pledge to provide a standard of care that is not just exemplary, but transformative.”

According to Inova, its Alexandria facility also achieved four exemplars or nationally recognized best practice models. They were for “top performance in the prevention of central line bloodstream infections, catheter-associated urinary tract infections, hospital-acquired pressure injuries, and patient burns in the ambulatory setting,” the hospital said.

Last year, Inova Mount Vernon Hospital earned Magnet Status. Both Inova Loudoun and Inova Fair Oaks hospitals have maintained Magnet status, the Loudoun hospital since 2006 and Fair Oaks since 2009. In 1997, Inova Fairfax Hospital was among the first to be recognized. It kept its designation through 2015 and was designated again in 2020.
