With the most recent state election giving Virginia democrats a majority in the statehouse, the Virginia General Assembly is tackling the legalization of marijuana for recreational use. As of today, both the Virginia House and Senate have passed two versions of the bill, which could open dispensaries for recreational use as early as 2024, and continue to discuss the details before sending it to Gov. Ralph Northam, who has publicly expressed his support for legalization.
Discussion of the legislation will most likely continue through the year, but NoVA’s neighbor, Washington, DC, is already included in the growing list of locations where marijuana is legal for medicinal and recreational purposes. As long as usage is restricted to those 21 years old and above, conducted on private property and the amount remains below the legal limit, an individual cannot be criminally charged for using the drug in DC.
As the country as a whole moves toward legalization, marijuana-related activities, including cannabis tourism, have grown across the country, especially in states like California and Colorado, where the drug has been legal for many years. According to the Marijuana Business Daily, an organization that provides updated information on the cannabis industry, the estimated economic impact of legal marijuana will increase by 223% from 2017 to 2022.
