You can now combine your love of music and paddling thanks to Fredericksburg Parks, Recreation & Events. The department kicks off May with its Concert by Canoe series.
Each Wednesday throughout the month, paddlers can head out on Motts Run Reservoir to catch a one-of-a-kind performance as the sun starts to set on the water. The gates open at 5 p.m. and the concert runs from 6 to 8 p.m.
There will be five events in the series, with performers including the following:
- The Phipps on May 1;
- Harry Wilson Trio on May 8;
- Bluegrass All-Stars on May 15;
- Alpha Jerk on May 22;
- Moch Pryderi on May 29.
Guests are encouraged to pre-register online to guarantee a spot on the reservoir. There will be a $10 parking fee per vehicle. Those heading to the reservoir can bring their own canoe, kayak, or boat, or rent one for the evening. Those looking to rent can choose between a canoe (which fits up to four people) for $8, a solo kayak for $12, a tandem kayak for $15, or a Jon boat with oars (which fits up to four people) for $20. Only boats with no motors or electric boats are permitted at the event.
Everyone on the water must wear a life jacket. Paddlers can either bring their own or rent one for $1. No shore listeners or stand-up paddleboards will be permitted. Concert by Canoe participants also cannot fish during the concert.
