The Leesburg competition will take place October 27-30. Leesburg’s Ion International Training Center will be one of eight locations hosting the series, which also includes rinks in Georgia, Indiana, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nevada, Texas, and Washington.
“U.S. Figure Skating looks forward to returning to Loudoun County and Ion International Training Center for the 2022 U.S. Figure Skating Championship Series presented by Toyota,” said Mia Corsini, U.S. Figure Skating Director, Events. “We’re excited to pick up where we left off in the fall of 2020 and bring a phenomenal event to a top-notch facility, with a community that embraces figure skating from collaboration with ION FSC and the SC of Northern Virginia to the strong support from Visit Loudoun.”
Due to COVID-19, the Championship Series will replace the usual pre-pandemic format of challenges and finals. The series consists of eight competitions over a six-week period starting October 4. Those with the highest scores earned will advance from the to the 2022 Toyota U.S. Figure Skating Championships in January 2022, heading into the Olympic year.
The Leesburg competition will expect more than 400 figure skaters and 200 coaches from 21 states over the four-day period.
“We are thrilled to offer skaters in our region the opportunity to compete after so many competitions had to cancel because of COVID-19,” said Melissa Mahle, Skating Club of Northern Virginia Competitions Chair.
Figure skating fans that are looking to grab tickets for the sporting event can start pre-purchasing their seats in late September. While the series is currently being planned as an in-person event, it is still subject to public health conditions.
If the four-day competition isn’t enough figure skating for you, then you are in luck. The weekend before the Championship Series, the city will also be hosting the Blue Ridge Classic figure skating competition at Ion International. Free to attend, this competition will feature developing competitive skaters from the South Atlantic region. So, mark your calendar and fill up your October plans with the best figure skating in the country.
