6 Ways to Celebrate Black History Month in Northern Virginia

Here’s how you can honor Black stories, history, and culture this month.

February is full of events honoring Black history and culture. From soulful performances to inspiring stories, discover the voices that shape our nation. Here are six ways you can celebrate Black History Month in NoVA.  

Un/Bound Free Black Virginians, 1619–1865 

Through March 9 

Explore the powerful stories of free Black Virginians from 1619 to the end of the Civil War. This exhibit includes firsthand accounts and historic objects to show the resilience of the African American community. Fairfax Museum and Visitor Center, Fairfax, free 

Tastes of Home: African American Culture and American Cuisine 

February 14, 11 a.m.  

Celebrate Black culinary heritage as this hands-on event connecting food, history, and culture. Learn about West and Central African roots of Southern dishes and sample traditional recipes. Ben Lomond Historic Site, Manassas, $20+ 

Virginia Opera: Intelligence 

February 14–15 

Experience a gripping performance inspired by the true story of Mary Jane Bowser, an enslaved woman turned Union spy. This Civil War story will have you on the edge of your seat. George Mason University’s Center for the Arts, Fairfax, $45+ 

Historic Change: Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Althea Gibson 

February 21, 11 a.m. 

See the trailblazing athletic legacy of Althea Gibson, the first African American woman to win the Grand Slam. This family-friendly exhibit includes creating a medal inspired by Gibson and other activities. National Museum of African American History and Culture, Washington, DC, free 

Black History & Culture Fest

February 28, 1–5 p.m.

Loudoun County Parks, Recreation, and Community Services will host its third annual Black history event at the Sterling Community Center. Expect live performances and educational exhibits, including an appearance from author and poet Tony Medina. Sterling Community Center, Sterling, free

The 26th Annual Virginia Black History Month Gala 

February 28, 6 p.m. 

End the month with an annual celebration of Black excellence and community. This year features keynote speaker actor Kadeem Hardison and a Black vendor showcase both in-person and online. Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel, Arlington, $30+
