New Indoor ‘Active Gaming’ Facility Opens in Sterling Tomorrow

Activate combines elements of arcade games with physical challenges.

Sterling is getting a new indoor entertainment venue. Activate, “the world’s first active gaming facility,” is ready to open its doors in Sterling’s Cascade Marketplace.

Starting August 27, players will enter game rooms filled with interactive technology and take on a series of challenges. The venue combines arcade-style games with physical challenges for action-packed fun. Through August 30, all players will be able to experience one free 60-minute experience as part of Activate’s grand opening.

“We’re so excited to make our Virginia debut in the dynamic DMV region,” said Adam Schmidt, co-founder and CEO of Activate. “We’re excited to bring something totally new to the area: an experience that combines tech, teamwork, and physical gameplay in a way that keeps people coming back.”

Activate launched in 2017 and currently has more than 40 locations across North America, the UK, and Dubai. Financial Times called it “the No. 1 fastest-growing leisure and entertainment brand.”

The Sterling location will encompass 9,212 square feet with 11 game rooms with over 800 challenges to choose from. That includes the Mega Grid, in which players hop on touch-sensitive LED floor panels. When those panels light up, players jump to step on certain panels and avoid others.

Players can work in groups of two to five as a team in Cooperative Mode or going head-to-head in Competitive Mode. RFID wristbands log achievements as they play.

Open daily, players can purchase 60 minutes of play for $28 or 90 minutes for $38. Players must be at least 6 years old in order to participate. Anyone between the ages of 6 and 13 will need an adult present during their gaming experience.

And this isn’t the only recent opening at the Cascades Marketplace — Brasserie Royale, a new French bistro, just opened in the same center.
