A New Trivia-Style Game Is Popping Up in NoVA

See where you can play OpinioNation, an opinion-based quiz game, around Northern Virginia.

Looking for some weeknight entertainment beyond your typical trivia Tuesday? A different type of bar game is popping up in Northern Virginia bars and breweries, and you don’t need to be a genius to play.

This is OpinioNation, a trivia-style game where, instead of factual knowledge, players try to guess the five most popular answers to fun survey questions, similar to Family Feud. It was created by the national trivia brand Sporcle.

The host will read off subjective questions, like, “Name a place where you might find neon lights” or “What is a U.S. city known for its music scene?” The teams that guess the most popular responses earn points, and those with the most points at the end of the game win.

Crooked Run Fermentation in Sterling is one of a handful of NoVA establishments to run a weekly OpinioNation night. Every Monday night, the brewery holds two rounds of the game at 6:30 and 7:30 p.m. Teams of around five to seven come to play, with the promise of prizes — things like gift cards or merchandise — to the first, second, and third place winners.

“We don’t have a big following now, but every week it gets a little bigger,” says Nikole Lebeda, general manager of Crooked Run Fermentation. This is just one of Crooked Run’s popular weekly events, which also include trivia, karaoke, and line dancing.

OpinioNation is also a regular event at Solace Brewing Company in Sterling, where there are weekly events at 2 and 3 p.m. on Sundays. The Philadelphia Tavern in Manassas hosts it on Thursdays at 7:30 and 8:30 p.m.

“Bring a team. Come with your friends. It’s just really fun,” Lebeda says.
