George Mason Offers Free Tickets to Laid Off Federal Workers

More than 20 performances at GMU’s Center for the Arts and Hylton Performing Arts Center are included in the offer.

The Northern Virginia community continues to come together to support federal workers who have recently been laid off from their jobs. George Mason University joined the list of organizations lending support by offering free tickets to unemployed federal workers and contractors.

The offer is for performances at Mason’s arts venues, which includes the Center for the Arts and Harris Theatre at GMU’s Fairfax campus, plus the Hylton Performing Arts Center in Manassas.

“For more than 30 years, Mason Arts has enriched the greater Northern Virginia community through dynamic performances,” George Mason University’s College of Visual and Performing Arts dean Rick Davis said in a release. “One of our Mason Arts values reflects a deep commitment to community — to manifest and celebrate the role of the arts in creating community by providing access to artistic work for all people. During this time, when some in our community may need it most, we want to make access to arts experiences easier.”

The free-ticket offer includes more than 20 shows, including Cirque Mechanics, American Festival Pops Orchestra: Armed Forces Day Celebration, and A Year With Frog and Toad.

Ticket reservations can be made by phone or at the venue’s ticket office. Federal workers will need to confirm the government agency they worked for and the date of separation. Reservations can be made beginning two Tuesdays prior to each performance. Guests can reserve up to four tickets per show, depending on the performance.

And for those who can’t make it out to the theater, Mason Arts Amplified offers free access to its library of digital performances.
