‘Tis the season to be jolly. Even though fake Christmas trees are here to stay, nothing will bring you more holiday joy than the smell of fresh pine when you cut down your own tree. Here are four Christmas tree farms throughout Northern Virginia that provide the whole family with an unforgettable experience.
Hank’s Christmas Trees at Hartland Farm
Combine picking out your tree with your annual visit with Santa Claus. Comb the fields for the perfectly shaped tree or wander the lot for a pre-cut Fraser fir. The farm also offers a private ride on Santa’s Magical Train this year. Reservations are required to climb aboard for a special meet-and-greet and to hand-deliver your wish list. All guests will receive candy canes and reindeer food from Santa. As the staff helps prepare the tree for its drive home, enjoy complimentary hot chocolate or order a cup of hot cider, a tasty smashburger, or grilled cheese. 12230 Belle Meade Rd., Markham; free admission, $89 for Santa’s Magical Train Ride
Moose Apple Christmas Tree Farm
For over 20 years, Moose Apple Tree Farm has been part of many holiday family traditions, and we can see why. From the over 30 acres of Christmas trees and the adorable indoor market full of holiday décor to the fresh treats and photo ops, you’ll get the full experience when you visit this farm. 2425 Wickliffe Rd., Berryville, $50 for tree-cutting reservation

Snead’s Farm
Make your way to Fredericksburg for not only beautiful Christmas trees but also immaculate backgrounds for your holiday photos. The cut-your-own tree farm offers Colorado blue spruce trees and aromatic Virginia cedars each Christmas. While you’re at the farm, let your little ones explore the play area, which includes a life-size gingerbread house. If you’re looking for holiday card-quality photos, bring your photographer for an additional $20 fee. 18294 Tidewater Trl., Fredericksburg, $5 for admission
Snickers Gap Christmas Tree Farm
Plan to spend the afternoon wandering the fields of this Loudoun County farm. With over 36,000 trees of all sizes, you’ll want to take your time to find the perfect one for your home. After you make your way back, find fresh wreaths and other tree accessories to make this year’s tree sparkle. Don’t forget to grab a photo with the farm’s 1948 Ford “little red truck” and a cider and soft pretzel at the Snack Shack. 34350 Williams Gap Rd., Round Hill, free admission
