Sunflower season is starting in Northern Virginia. In NoVA, you have great options, whether you want some fresh flowers to brighten your day or a fun day with the family. Here are farms where you can finish off your summer with blooming flowers.
Great Country Farms
July to August, open daily 10 a.m.–5 p.m.
During July and August, you can cut your own sunflowers for $1 a stem or add on a mini bucket with 10 cut-your-own stems. Bring your own clippers. The farm is holding a sunflower photo contest through July 31. You can win a Fan of the Farm pass worth $200 or a weekend for up to six people at Blue Door Farm Cottage in the Blue Ridge Mountains worth $525. 34345 Snickersville Tpk., Bluemont, $12 for adults, $10 for kids 3–17 and seniors
Burnside Farms
3 to 4 weeks starting in mid-July 15, times vary
Nestled in pastoral Nokesville, Burnside Farms plant over 30 varieties of “cutting” sunflowers on over 70 acres of land. Tickets are required to enter the fields to pick three stems, and there are several picking times. Prices vary by time of day. The farm is open Thursdays through Mondays. On Friday and Saturday evenings, the farm has live music and fireworks during its Sunset Festival Series. Hollin Farms
July, Wednesdays through Sundays, 9 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Although known for its extensive selection of fruits and vegetables, the family-run Hollin Farms also grows beautiful zinnias and sunflowers to pick. You can check the website, which is updated daily. Sunflowers are $1 a stem and zinnias are 50 cents a stem. The farm, which is open Wednesdays through Sundays, sometimes gives away flowers to customers who buy fruit. 1524 Snowden Rd., Delaplane
Braehead Farm
July through September, open daily 9 a.m.–6 p.m.
At Braehead Farm, the rules are pretty simple. There are no reservations and no admission to the fields, you just pay for what you pick, with sunflowers priced at $1.50 a bloom. 1130 Tyler St., Fredericksburg
