While many Smithsonian museums are still closed, there are plenty of events and exhibitions that have gone virtual, including the popular Smithsonian Associates programs. As we move closer to the autumn season, Smithsonian Associates has announced four new virtual art and architecture tours to be held in the coming months.
All four study tours will be take place on Zoom for both members and nonmembers of the program. Participants in the World Art History Certificate Program will also receive ½ elective credit for participating in either the Closeup on the Barnes Collection or Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater tour.
Closeup on the Barnes Collection
Thursday, Aug. 20, 10-11 a.m.
Take a virtual trip up to Philadelphia to take a look at the Barnes Collection. Participants will be able to tour the museum and examine some of the greatest post-impressionist and early-modern art pieces in the world. // $30-$40
Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater
Sunday, Sept. 13, 4-5:15 p.m.
Built in rural Pennsylvania, this late 1930s house is one of the pivotal designs in the history of modern architecture. Led by lecturer Bill Keene, this tour will focus on the structure’s iconic design and the man behind the creation. // $30-$40
Sears Houses of Arlington
Saturday, Sept. 26, 10-11:30 a.m.
Take a tour through your own backyard with a virtual tour of the Sears houses in Arlington. These prefabricated homes are seen throughout Arlington County from when the area saw growth in the 1920s. During this session, participants will be able to view around 50 Sears homes with various designs, while learning about the history of the prefabricated house. // $45-$55
George Washington in Alexandria
Friday, Oct. 16, 6:30-8 p.m.
Alexandria is an essential part of George Washington’s history. Author and historian Garrett Peck will be leading participants through some of the churches, houses and taverns that the former president frequented during the 18th century. This tour is limited to 60 participants. // $45-$55
