9-Year-Old Killed in Herndon E-Scooter Crash

Police urge community members to encourage kids to wear helmets when riding scooters.

A 9-year-old boy was killed Thursday evening in a collision with a vehicle while he was riding an electric scooter, Fairfax County Police Department announced.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. on July 23 near the 3000 block of Madden Court in Herndon. Based on a preliminary investigation, FCPD said the boy was riding an electric scooter without a helmet.

The initial investigation showed that the driver of a 2012 Honda Odyssey was turning from Highland Mews Court onto Madden Court when the boy on the electric scooter struck her car. The driver remained on the scene, and the boy was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

“There’s no indication at this time that there was any unsafe or reckless manner in which the driver, an adult female, was operating the van,” said FCPD Capt. Harold Morris in a Friday press briefing.

“This is a very tragic incident for everyone in this neighborhood and for everyone involved, and we continue to hold everyone here in our thoughts and prayers,” FCPD Capt. Chris Cosgriff said in a news conference Thursday evening.

FCPD will continue to investigate the details of the incident. Cosgriff urges parents and community members to teach kids safety rules about scooters and encourage them to wear helmets.

“Please have your kids wear helmets. Teach them the basic safety rules. Keep an eye on them,” he said. “This is a neighborhood with a lot of parents who are out and about. You know, don’t hesitate to speak up if you see something dangerous, whether it’s your kid or not.”

Anyone with information about the incident can contact FCPD’s crash reconstruction unit at 703-280-0543.
