10 in-person and virtual events for seniors this month

Whether you want to join a socially distanced workout group or take a virtual webinar on gardening, here are some fun events for the rest of August.

With the days blending together, somehow August is already halfway over. Even though daily routines are still affected by the pandemic, you can enjoy these last few weeks of summer. Whether you are ready to get out of the house (and social distance) or still feel the need to stay at home, here are 10 in-person and virtual events for seniors to keep you entertained this month. 

55+ Outdoor Needle Craft Group

Mondays, 10 a.m.-noon
Get some much needed socializing in at this weekly needle craft group. Bring along whatever knitting or sewing project that you are working on for a morning full of meaningful conversations. // Virginia Highlands Park: 1600 S. Hayes St., Arlington; free

Seated Strength Exercise 

Tuesdays and Thursdays, 9-10 a.m.
Skip your exercise tape and get outside to enjoy some fresh air. Head to the park for a socially distanced workout that focuses on increasing your strength with the help of a chair. Participants should bring their own water. // Fort Ethan Allen Park: 3829 N. Stafford St., Arlington; free

Tai Chi for Seniors

Wednesday, Aug. 19, 10-11 a.m.
Release your stress and practice meditation with a quick session of tai chi. This class focuses on physical problems that can arise with aging. Social distancing will be enforced during this session. // Vanguard Gym: 9414 Center Point Lane, Manassas; $130

Understanding & Responding to Dementia-Related Behavior 

Wednesday, Aug. 19, noon-1 p.m.
There is no better time than now to start focusing on your health. This educational webinar teaches participants different ways to decode behavior and identify behavior triggers of those with Alzheimer’s disease. // free

Bad Broads Book Club: I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings

Wednesday, Aug. 19, 7-8 p.m.
Crack open a new book and join the Bad Broads Book Club. This monthly book club focuses on books by women authors across all genres. For August, the group will be meeting virtually to discuss Maya Angelou’s autobiography I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings. // free

Cooking From The Pantry

Friday, Aug. 21, 7:30-9 p.m.
Spice up your usual evening meal with a new recipe or two. Join the Lovettsville Cooperative Market as it hosts a Facebook Live cooking event, teaching viewers how to make meals with some common products found in your freezer and pantry. // free

Virtual Summer Saturdays: Gardening

Saturday, Aug. 22, 10:30-11:30 a.m.
If you mostly spend your days in the garden, you’ll love Gunston Hall’s historic garden lecture. Participants will learn about the Mason family and how people in the 1700s needed to save seeds in order to feed their family. This event will be held on Zoom. // free

Virtual Afternoon Tea: Who Does Tea Better? 

Sunday, Aug. 23, 2 p.m.
At Green Spring Gardens’ virtual tea event, participants will learn the history of tea in the United Kingdom and United States. Discuss the difference between the countries as you sip on your own tea. For a true afternoon tea at home, stop by the garden to pick up a tea box full of finger sandwiches, pastries and tea. // $10 for lecture, $20 for tea box

Banner Year Virtual Paper Craft Workshop 

Saturday, Aug. 29, 10 a.m.
Get a head start on your holiday cards with Cloth, Paper, String’s paper craft workshop. Gather your crafting supplies and get step-by-step instructions on how to create the perfect card. Additional supplies for the event can be found here. // $36 for supplies

Corvettes & Tacos Cascades Overlook Town Center 

Saturday, Aug. 29, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
Car lovers, stop by Cascades Overlook Town Center for a special car show. Spend your Saturday appreciating both classic and new cars. // Cascades Overlook Town Center: 21453 Epicerie Plaza, Sterling; free
