5 March park events to put on your calendar

As the weather begins to warm in March, head outdoors to enjoy all local parks have to offer.

Come March, spring will be in bloom! Enjoy the swing of the seasons at these five events.

Animal Art: Deer
Saturday, March 7, 10-11 a.m.
Geared toward children aged 5 to 12, this program teaches the distinguishing features between male and female white-tailed deer. The kids will draw them in their late-winter habitats as they listen to fun facts. // Long Branch Nature Center at Glencarlyn Park: 625 S. Carlin Springs Road, Arlington; $5

Nature Hike – Changing Seasons
Sunday, March 15, 1-2 p.m.
Appropriate for ages 6 and older, this nature hike will help kids and adults alike learn about Northern Virginia’s native animals and how they adapt to the changing seasons. A naturalist will lead the hike around the park, where participants will examine changes in plants, animals and the environment during spring’s arrival. // Potomac Overlook Regional Park: 2845 Marcey Road, Arlington; $5

Research Rangers: Vernal Pools and Fish Seining
Friday, March 27, 10 a.m.-1 p.m.
What is a vernal pool? Come learn why these habitats are so important for amphibians, as well as which fish species live in the Potomac River. Plus, learn about how species reveal the river’s health at this interactive session—be prepared to get wet up to your waist! // Algonkian Regional Park: 47001 Fairway Drive, Sterling; $4

Carlyle Vitality Bootcamp Fitness
Saturday, March 28, 10 a.m.-noon
Get in your weekend sweat at this boot camp fitness class. The class is free to attend, and all ages and fitness levels are welcome. // John Carlyle Square Park: 300 John Carlyle St., Alexandria; free

Super Hero 5K
Sunday, March 29, 9-11 a.m.
Don your best superhero outfit and run in this 5K race, winding along the Occoquan River. The course is family-, stroller- and pet-friendly. This is one of the most popular races in the Brickyard 5K series, so be sure to register early. // Occoquan Regional Park: 9751 Ox Road, Lorton; $18-$30
