From Lee Ann Womack to a brewery’s vinyl night: What we’re looking forward to this week

This week, the editors at Northern Virginia Magazine are looking forward to an Alexandria performance from the country artist behind the hit song “I Hope You Dance,” looking at local art and an opportunity to play your favorite records.

“And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance” …
Friday, 7:30 p.m.
When my mom went back to work after having me—the eldest grandchild on that side of the family—my grandmother became my babysitter. There are home videos of me singing Deana Carter’s “Strawberry Wine,” which came out not too long after I was born, and dancing to “I Hope You Dance” by Lee Ann Womack, performing at the Birchmere on Friday. Womack’s performance will surely bring back some sweet childhood memories. –RK // The Birchmere: 3701 Mount Vernon Ave., Alexandria

Spring Redo
Through Friday
While most people begin purging their homes during the annual Spring Clean, I tend to move in the opposite direction. I look at spring as a time to change things up and give new life to the rooms in my house. This year, I’m focusing on giving attention to my bedroom. It’s a spot in the home that always seems to get left out of my creative spirits. Yes, my walls are painted a wonderful deep blue, and I have the requisite chair to go along with a bed, nightstands, a large mirror and dressers, but that is about it. With my mind set on upgrading this room, what better way to bring life into it than through art purchased from local artists? Artfest, hosted by Arlington Artists Alliance, is underway through March 23 and not only can you speak with the artists as you peruse their creative outlet, you can purchase items and take part in free demonstrations and workshops. –LN // Hendry House: 2411 N. 24th St., Arlington

Put Your Records On
Tuesday, 5:30-9 p.m.
I’ve longed to become a DJ from the moment I first heard recorded music, accruing decades of experience crafting mix tapes (and later, CDs) for the car and playlists for my many themed parties. Now, folks like me can gain hands-on disc jockey experience with the medium that started it all: vinyl. At Ashburn’s Lost Rhino, gather with audiophiles and throw your own records on the turntables provided by Herndon’s Right On! Records.  –EB // 21730 Red Rum Drive, Unit 142, Ashburn
